Mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry is an analysis technic for detecting and identifying molecules of interest by measuring their average or mono-isotopic mass.
Different elements make up a spectrometer:
- An introduction system to receive the sample, which will differ according to its nature (in the case of gas chromatography for example)
- An ion source, also called an ionization chamber
- An analyser, which differentiates ions on their mass-to-charge ratio, based on the movement of ions, kinetic energy, and the magnetic field
- A detector, which identifies the ions leaving the analyser
The mass spectrum obtained represents mass-to-charge ratio of the ions detected. Depending on the preferred type of ionization (chemical, electronic, thermal, etc.), you will then be able to identify, structurally analyse and quantify the molecules present.
