GC/MS spectrometer
Gas chromatography (GS) is used to split the mixtures into individual components using a temperature-controlled capillary column. Small molecules, which have low boiling stages, descend along the column faster than large molecules, which have high boiling stages. Mass spectrometry (MS) is used to identify the various components in their mass spectrum. Each component has a unique, or almost unique, mass spectrum that can be compared with mass spectra databases, allowing them to be identified.
